Why flexible working matters so much
A few years ago my husband became seriously ill. We both work for ourselves, so I looked at moving into a job so I could support our family while he recovered and take the pressure off.
I couldn’t find a single opportunity that I could combine with being present for my children or that didn’t ask me to make sacrifices I just wasn’t willing to make.
I’ve contributed a lot to the working world. I thought I’d fitted into it and loved being part of it. Most of all, I still had so much to give. So to find out that apparently there was now no place for me simply because I didn’t want to return to the 9-5 and dive back into the long hours culture made me angry.
My story is far from unique; and it’s now well known and widely publicised that every one of the five generations currently in our workforce demands and expects some flexibility.
But the injustice of the slow pace of change, our persistent gender pay gap and widespread increases in (sometimes) forced self-employment fuels my drive and commitment to change the world of work - not just for parents - but for every single working person.
Life has taught me - in beautiful and painful ways - that it is PRECIOUS. We all deserve to live a life that is built around the things we love.
Flexible working is one of the greatest tools we have to make that kind of life (and equality) happen for our people, which is why I devote much of my time to helping companies to embrace it in a sustainable way that works for the business as much as it does for its people.
